Clubs begin quest for Highland Amateur Cup in opening stages

AVOCH begin their Highland Amateur Cup campaign tonight when they welcome Culloden Blacksmiths to Coronation Park with kick-off at 6.30pm.

Avoch are the second most successful team in the competition’s history, having won the trophy six times, with only Dunnet outfit Pentland United have won the trophy more times with eight.

However, Avoch have not won the Highland Amateur Cup since 2017, although they did reach the final in 2019.

The winners will face Contin in the first round of the competition on May 13.

Meanwhile tomorrow, a number of Ross-shire heavyweights are also playing in the preliminary round.

The tie of the round in the south section will see Inverness Athletic take on Inverness and District Premier Division champions Maryburgh at Bught Park.

The winners will face a trip to Muir of Ord Rovers.

Evanton outfit Black Rock Rovers will be favourites to progress to the next round when they face CK Interiors, with the winner facing either Fort William or Portree in the first round.

Elsewhere in the preliminary round North West Skye take on Tomatin, Highland are set to face Sleat and Strath and Clachnacuddin Under-20’s are set to face Kyleakin in Inverness.

n The Inverness and District Premier Division kicked off this week with Avoch and Loch Ness sharing the points in a 2-2 draw at Coronation Park.

Avoch were 2–0 up after 20 minutes with goals from John Gillies and Ian Penwright. But Loch Ness hit back with two quickfire goals before half time.

Champions Maryburgh got their defence off to a flying start as they thrashed Black Rock Rovers 5–1 in Evanton.

Black Isle United suffered a 4–2 defeat at Inverness Athletic and Conon Bridge lost 4–2 at Clachnacuddin.

In Division One, Fortrose and Rosemarkie Union picked up their first win of the season with a 2–1 win at Gellions.

Scott Kenyon and Ross Harrison scored the goals to give them victory.

In Division Two, Contin hammered Muir of Ord 7–3 to move to fourth. Muir of Ord dropped to seventh in the table.
