? "KEEP your competitive swing in shape through the winter months!" — that’s the message from the group of clubs

forming the North Golf Alliance as their season gets into action this weekend at Durness.

From halcyon seasons when upwards of 90 turned up on a regular basis, the attendance has been declining to an extent that the visits to the courses on the rota have been reduced to only one and entry fees have been maintained at last season’s level.

They have always been regarded as an excellent way to retain familiarisation with the venues so that when the summer fixtures do come around the ground work

has been done and richer rewards can be won.

After a small membership fee of £4, the entry fee into each fixture is £8 with exception of the Royal Dornoch fixture where it is £13. The dates and venues for the Alliance season are: Sunday, October 7, Durness; Sunday, October 21, Thurso; Sunday, November 4, Royal Dornoch; Sunday, November 18, Tain; Sunday, December 2, Golspie: Sunday, December 16, Brora. Teams: January 20. Reay: February 3, Brora; February 17, Invergordon; March 3, Tarbat; March 17, Wick.

? THREE stalwart members of the Northern Counties Women’s Golf Association have been battling away over the Elie Golf Course in Fife in an attempt to regain the Sue Johnstone Trophy for Scotland.

Tain siblings Anne Ryan and Mary Smith are joined by Royal Dornoch’s Alison Bartlett in the Scottish women’s senior golf team for the 10th Senior Women’s Home Internationals. Scotland have only come out on top once since 2003, in 2009.

Wales have also been winners only once in the series dominated by England since inception but this year in Fife Ireland are expected to win for the first time, building on their bronze position in the recent European Senior championships which were played in Switzerland, five of their Swiss bronze medal team back in action again.
