Ross Sutherland Rugby Club hosted a mini tournament which saw Holy Cross School from Ontario compete in as part of their Scottish tour.

The school runs the Holy Cross Hurricanes boys rugby program in Peterborough, Ontario, which was touring outside of Canada for the first time as part of an athletic and cultural exchange.

The Canadian school travelled to Stirling and Inverness, where they received a tour of Highland Rugby Club before they competed in a mini tournament.

The club then travelled to Invergordon to compete in a mini tournament which also involved a North Under-18 team and Angus Colts team at the Naval Grounds last weekend.

Club spokesman Peter Carson says it was an excellent occasion which Ross Sutherland were delighted to have hosted.

“Mark Dobson, who is one of the regional managers for Caledonia Midlands asked if Ross Sutherland would host Canada v Midlands v North tournament,” said Carson.

“John Cairns the development officer for Orkney, was tasked with pulling together a North under-18 squad.

“George Riley and Owen Corr pulled together our boys who had attended senior training for the last few weeks.

“They joined with 10 boys from Orkney and four boys from Caithness for the North Squad and the Midlands team were made up of Angus Colts.

“The under-16 teams was made up of Aberdeen Wanderers, Holy Cross School and Ross Sutherland with some lads coming from Glenrothes to bolster the squad.

“The Canadians came with a goody bag for all the boys they played against filled with travel mugs, water bottles and other gifts.

“The coaches and match officials all received a bottle of Maple Whisky.”

During the Canadian club’s tour of Scotland, they played four competitive matches where they put in some impressive performances.

At the tournament in Invergordon, Holy Cross suffered a 26-10 defeat to North Under-18’s in a competitive match.

The other game in the mini tournament saw the North Under-18’s defeat Angus Colts 29–0.
