Victor Loturi insists the joy of earning an international call-up from Canada will not weaken his focus on Ross County’s scrap for Premiership survival.

The 21-year-old, initially named in South Sudan’s squad for this month’s AFCON qualification matches, instead chose his emigrant family’s adopted home nation after a second call a few days later.

Given Canada’s progress on the international stage and participation in the recent World Cup finals, it is a huge honour for Loturi, County’s reputed six-figure summer signing from Calvary FC.

Before flying off for Concacaf Nations League matches away to the Caribbean island nation of Curaçao and at home to Honduras on March 26 and 29, Loturi was tasked with trying to help the Staggies grasp vital points at Livingston.

Talking for the first time about his imminent national duty, Loturi found it hard to dwell on personal success so soon after a huge collective setback for County.

“It is a huge honour for me and for my family,” the talented midfielder said.

“I’m excited and I’m ready to go there with the national squad and show what I can do. Then I just want to return and help Ross County at this important time.

“It is County who have given me the platform to get into the national squad and show what I can do in this league. I’m grateful for that.”

Loturi’s frustration at a disappointing away performance was palpable, despite important matches for Canada that double as an opportunity to reach the 2022/23 Concacaf Nations League Final and the 2023 Concacaf Gold Cup.

Whatever transpires across the Atlantic, Loturi wants to be heading off for summer action with County safe and secure.

“We know where we are, we know it is tight,” he said.

“All we can do is take it day by day and keep working hard. If we do, I’m positive that results will come, knowing the group we have and how good we can be.”
