ALNESS Athletic sharp-shooter Donald Sutherland hopes to notch 40 this season — despite taking a couple of weeks out to attend the World Cup in Brazil!

Sutherland (29) made a great start last week, bagging seven during his side’s 11-1 cup romp over Ross-shire Club.

It’s not even the first time that the 29-year-old has scored that many. He notched seven against Contin as a Black Rock Rovers player in the amateur league a few years back.

On his scoring feat last Saturday, he added: "I scored two goals in the first half, then the floodgates opened. I got the first one with my left foot, one with my head and a few with my right, in fact, every part of my body."

Looking forward, he said: "This is my first full season in the Welfare. My target this season is 40, although my best was 46 in the Amateur one season."

The Alness ace, who has netted 12 times in his first three matches this season, added: "The boys worked out on Saturday night if I kept this average up I would get 115 goals — I don’t think I’ll get that many but 40 would be a nice."

Welfare defences will be relieved to learn Donald is taking a couple of weeks out during the summer, heading to the World Cup in Brazil with a few of his team-mates.

"I’ll be missing for a few weeks but hopefully I can still reach my target," he said.

He has other goals to chase, too. Fraser Munro netted nine times for Invergordon Social Club in a record 22-0 romp over Tain Thistle back in 2001.
