MALKY Mackay is backing Eamonn Brophy to rekindle his Scotland career after watching the striker inspire Ross County to a huge 4–0 win in the relegation fight.

The January signing preyed on a dismal Dundee United with two goals and two assists to give the Staggies a four-point advantage on the bottom side with one extra game played.

Having borrowed Brophy from St Mirren for the rest of the season, Mackay spoke of his delight at the 26-year-old’s impact despite a lack of game time.

And asked if Brophy could recapture a place in the international set-up on the back of the loan stint, Mackay responded: “Absolutely.

“He’s still a young man and he’s got something that a lot of people don’t have, which is an eye for goal.

“Not only does he have that, but he’s got the ability to score different types of goals.

“What a strike the last one was.

“As managers, we are all crying out for centre forwards.

“I told him to come in here until the end of the season, give everything he’s got and he will be part of everything - and we will see how he is at the end of the season.

“Who knows what the future holds.

“He’s been an absolute diamond since coming here.

“We’ve had to be careful with him because he has not played a lot of football in the last six to nine months.

“I’ve known him for a number of years and he was involved in my Scotland under-21s and clearly had a massive impact at Kilmarnock when Steve Clarke had him.

“He has fitted in very easily, he’s really low maintenance. I thought him and Jordan did really well together.”

Mackay also hailed County’s all-round team showing, adding: “I’m delighted with the performance and result, and the way we started both halves, because 2-0 up is a dangerous scoreline.

“We could have got more, but it’s also an eight-goal swing between ourselves and United, which is important, and a clean sheet.”

Jordan White reflected on County’s steady improvement since the turn of the year saying results are encouraging.

He said: “It was a massive win for us at the weekend.

“St Mirren the week before was poor, but we went out and really proved a point. It was a big statement against Dundee United.

“We’ve got a good group of players who believe in what we’re doing here.

“Any team in the league wants good home form and maybe at the start of the season we didn’t have that.

“The previous couple of results had been really good and positive.”
