ALNESS United manager Robert MacCormack says his team can take a lot of confidence from pushing Invergordon all the way in the North Caledonian League opener last weekend, despite losing 3–2.

An own goal five minutes from time was all that separated the two teams in a five-goal thriller.

Now Alness are looking to pick up their first points when they face Bonar Bridge at Dalmore Park tomorrow.

Alness won the Division Two title last season when the NCL was split into two leagues while Invergordon finished runners-up in Division One.

MacCormack says his team last season were left pondering how they would fare against the top flight clubs.

Now the league is one division again, he says last week proved to him they can take on the best and is hoping for more positive results against the league’s big hitters this season.

“We have a young squad, so to go down 2–0 to Invergordon and then come back into it shows what these young boys are willing to do.

“They have carried into the group a fighting spirit.

“We were disappointed to lose the game, but they have shown to me what we have as a group and what we can take forward.”

Saturday’s game has been switched to Dalmore Park from Migdale and while going into the match as favourites to pick up all three points, MacCormack is not underestimating the danger the Sutherland outfit will bring as the club still has to juggle with players involved in summer football which is in its final week.

“Summer football is a big part of what our guys play in and it is hard to switch focus straight away.

“As soon as the summer football is done we can get all of our focus on Alness United, including myself with Black Rock Rovers who could win IDFA Division One on Friday. But Bonar Bridge will be a tough test.”
