ROBERT MacCormack is challenging Alness United to prove in 2022 they are more than just big-game hunters.

The Easter Ross outfit has pulled off some superb results against the North Caledonian League’s leading lights so far this season, beating Halkirk away in the league and Invergordon on their travels in the cup.

They also drew at home with title contenders Golspie, but have shed points against lower table sides Nairn, St Duthus and Thurso.

That inconsistency is something manager MacCormack is naturally keen to stamp out after the winter break, having closed the first half of the season with a 1-1 draw away to bottom of the table Inverness Athletic.

A tough start to January doesn’t faze MacCormack given that topsy-turvy trend, but he is determined to see his team hit full potential in a tough restart away to Orkney, before facing Invergordon at home and Loch Ness away.

“We’ve gone to Invergordon and beaten them this season, and gone up to Halkirk and won as well,” MacCormack said.

“Against these kind of teams, we seem to be getting results. It is just in some of the so-called less difficult games where we’ve let ourselves down.

“Hopefully we can carry the good elements into the New year but, as I’ve said many times when we play to our best we’re a match for any team.

“We’re just too inconsistent at the moment.”

Assessing the first half of the season, the manager added: “It has been very mixed. It was probably summed up by Saturday where we just weren’t at it.

“We’re creating chances, which is good, but we’re just not taking enough of them. It is quite frustrating because it is coming back and haunting us. Hopefully in the second half of the season we can put that right.

“It is easier said than done, but we just need to find that good balance of scoring goals and not conceding easily.”
