Alness United manager Rob MacCormack wants his side to show what they are really capable of in the North Caledonian Cup.

His squad travel to Halkirk United on Saturday for a quarter final clash knowing they have already won there in the league this season.

Generally speaking though, Alness’ league campaign has been a disappointing one, meaning the cup is a chance to salvage something from their campaign.

“We’re away to Halkirk, and we’ve been up there and beaten them before,” MacCormack said.

“We’ve got to take that into account. It’s never, ever easy going up there, so we’ve got to go in with a bit of belief. It’s the cup, so we’ve got to go for it – which we will – and you never know what’s going to happen.

“Our league position is nowhere near what I thought it was going to be at the start of the season.

“We know it – I know it and the players know it – we’ve been really disappointing in the league this year.

“We would like to get a wee cup run to hopefully show how good we can be on our day.

“We haven’t been as good as we can be often enough this season.”

This week was due to see a rare addition to Alness’ fixture list – a midweek match away at Golspie Sutherland.

That game was postponed, but there could well be more Wednesday matches before the season is out to fit the outstanding matched into Alness United’s calendar.

“We usually train midweek, so instead of training we’ll just be playing the game instead,” he explained.

“Hopefully we won’t have to change our squad too much from Saturday to Wednesday and they will just go hand-in-hand, because we’re still looking to improve in every game.

“The last set of fixtures we’ve got are not easy, but no game this season has been easy for us. We just need to keep going and hopefully we can get as many points by the end of the season as we can.

“You get winning momentum, and you get losing momentum.

“We haven’t been great, so we’ll need to turn that around and end the season as strongly as we possibly can.”
