Alness United fail to stop Inverness Athletic go top of the league

ALNESS United suffered their second defeat of the North Caledonian League campaign after they went down 3–1 to league leaders Inverness Athletic at Dalmore Park on Wednesday.

All the goals came in the second half with Athletic breaking the deadlock 11 minutes after the interval.

A well worked corner eventually ended up on the head of Ryan Macleod who nodded home.

Athletic doubled their advantage with 20 minutes remaining when Connel Gresham chased down a poor clearance and managed to float the ball over the goalkeeper Nat Valante into the empty net.

Alness fought back and reduced the deficit to one nine minutes from time, but Athletic killed off the game six minutes from the end when Gresham sprung the offside trap and fired into an empty net.

The win has put Inverness Athletic top of the table on nine points and two points clear of Loch Ness.

Alness United are in ninth place in the league with one win from three games on three points.

Elsewhere on Wednesday night, Golspie Sutherland maintained their 100 per cent record with a 5–2 win over Bonar Bridge at King George V Park.

Golspie took a 3–0 lead after 10 minutes with Miller Mackay opening the scoring for Golspie.

Robbie Murray doubled the hosts’ advantage three minutes later with Adam Sutherland making it 3–0 after just 10 minutes of play.

But Bonar Bridge attempted a comeback and pulled one back in the 31st minute thanks to a strike from Scott MacDonald.

Mackay restored Golspie’s three goal advantage at half time to put them 4–1 up at the break.

Bonar Bridge pulled one back six minutes after the interval.

Jack Corbett scored in the 51st minute and kept the game alive. But nine minutes from time Murray scored his second to give Golspie three points.

Halkirk United beat Thurso 3–0 with goals from Andrew Mackay, Aidan Reid and Alan Mathieson earning them three points.
