A bank situated in the heart of Ross-shire’s county town closed its doors for the final time on Wednesday.

When the Royal Bank of Scotland announced it was to close its Dingwall branch on November 1 back in July, it was described as “another nail in the coffin” for the town by one angry councillor.

Another who had worked there, Angela MacLean, said: As a local councillor I am disappointed that the Royal Bank of Scotland has taken the financial decision to close the Dingwall branch this November. I would like to thank all the staff who have served their customers diligently over the years for their excellent customer service, and I hope they are all able to find employment within the RBS group. The staff over the years have done a great deal to support local charities and have raised much needed funds in their own time. You will all be missed!"

Some took to our Facebook page to share their thoughts this week as the closure date arrived.

‘Thank you for all the extra help received recently.’

– Andrea Munro

‘Even having once won the Royal Bank branch of the year couldn’t save it. Yet again the Bank of Scotland is the ‘last man standing’ as in Tain. A disgrace that between Inverness and Wick/Thurso a distance of more than 100 miles, the only RBS branch left is in Alness and we must ask for how long!! Sadly a reflection on the fact most under 50s don’t walk further than their mobile phone to do anything nowadays. If people don’t actually go to shops, banks etc and buy things then all we will be left with are a group of delivery warehouses on the outskirts of every large town. I try to do all my shopping in a physical shop and only use Amazon etc once or twice a year.’

- Mark Sutherland-Fisher

‘Dingwall is slowly becoming a ghost town! Nine-plus empty shop buildings on the high street. It’s dire. It’s literally a street of hairdressers, charity shops and takeaways.’

– Kelly MacDonald

‘Absolutely, what a disgrace.’

- Tracey Park
