An announcement about the future of the Caledonian Sleeper is expected to be made by transport minister Jenny Gilruth to MSPs, on Thursday according to The Rail, Maritime and Transport union (RMT).

This comes as the RMT urged the Scottish government to take the Caledonian Sleeper into public ownership, ahead of a decision.

The Scottish Government is ending the contract with the current provider Serco in June – seven years early.

RMT has long campaigned for this piece of vital infrastructure to be in public ownership, for the good of rail workers and the travelling public.

General secretary of the RMT Mick Lynch said: “Serco has made millions off the back of running a service that should be run by the public and for the public.

“We have pressured the Scottish government alongside politicians and others to do the right thing and take Caledonian Sleeper into public ownership."
