QUICK-THINKING locals in an Easter Ross community helped save the lives of two beached whales today.

Three stranded whales were spotted on Wednesday morning at on the beach at Portmahomack by local woman Jacqueline Vass who was out walking her dogs at the time.

Word quickly got around as animal welfare charity the SSPCA was alerted and locals rushed to the scene to help in any way they could.

Scottish SPCA senior inspector Andy Brown told the Journal: "We have been in attendance at Portmahomack where three pilot whales stranded earlier this morning.

"Sadly, one of the whales perished but we were able to successfully re-float two with the assistance of British Divers Marine Life Rescue, the coastguard, police and members of the public.

"We will continue to monitor their progress and anyone who spots a whale close to shore should contact our animal helpline on 03000 999 999."
