ROSS-SHIRE is continuing to rally to refugees fleeing the horrors of war in Ukraine in a number of imaginative and heartfelt ways.

In Wester Ross, potter Vicky Stonebridge came up with the idea of creating handmade hearts bearing a poignant slogan to raise funds for the Red Cross humanitarian relief programme.

Orders have come in from afield as the United States.

The Lochcarron-based artist said: "It's been good to quietly come together with others to share our despair and helplessness in the face of this and all the other ongoing wars.

"The hearts get fired twice and the whole process takes a little while as they have to dry out before going into the kiln.

"The first batches have sold out within a few hours of them coming out of the kiln.

"People have been very generous and I have been posting them across the UK and some even went to the US."

And on the Black Isle, school children stepped up to the challenge with a sponsored walk that symbolises the journey millions of Ukrainians have been forced to make because of the Russian invasion.

See more on both of these stories in tomorrow's Ross-shire Journal.
