A chick's maiden flight has excited great interest in Wester Ross

THE maiden flight of a sea eagle chick in Wester Ross has bolstered hopes that the reintroduced birds are making a steady recovery in Scotland.

Conservation charity, the National Trust for Scotland, has reported a successful breeding season at two of its sea eagle sites in the north west, which includes Shieldaig Island.

Conservationists have confirmed that a chick raised by the resident sea eagle pair on Shieldaig Island recently took its maiden flight.

The trust works in partnership with local RSPB Scotland experts to monitor the birds at the site.

White-tailed eagles, or sea eagles, became extinct from the UK in the early 20th century, largely due to human killing.
