SHOPPERS are starting to return to the centre of the Highland capital as lockdown measures ease.

Mike Smith, manager of the Inverness Business Improvement District, said footfall was at its highest since the start of the coronavirus lockdown as he walked around the city streets this week.

“It was always expected there would be a gradual return as people grew in confidence and more shops opened,” Mr Smith said.

“People will have different levels of confidence, experiences and requirements.

“But it was lovely to see people sitting outside enjoying a coffee and a chat.”

Mr Smith said the reopening of the Eastgate Shopping Centre and Victorian Market on Monday would further add to the number of people coming into the city centre.

He said Eastgate, along with stores such as Primark, TK Maxx, Marks and Spencer and Morrisons, plus the hospitality sector, were major footfall drivers.
