The multi-purpose Haven Centre for young people in the Highlands with complex needs will be like no other in Scotland.

Following this week's handover of the keys to the completed building in Smithton, attention now turns to fitting it out in preparation for it opening this summer.

Elsie Normington, who has campaigned for the last 10 years to make the dream of the centre a reality for hundreds of Highland families, explained what sets the centre apart from others.

"The Haven Centre is special in that it is unique in Scotland," she said.

"There is no other centre like it that provides a specialist play centre, respite facilities and a community cafe all on the one site. That will make it truly unique."

The project has been led by the Elsie Normington Foundation.

The Special Needs Action Project (SNAP) will provide play services in the centre. There are also three respite flats on the site for young adults up to the age of 30.
