WATCH: Network Rail Scotland video of locomotive plough clearing deep snow from the Highland mainline

VIDEO of a rail locomotive plough battling deep drifts on the Highland mainline has been released by Network Rail Scotland.

Part of the Highland mainline has been closed due to heavy snow and drifting between Carrbridge and Blair Atholl. Some trains are running between Inverness and Aviemore, and others from the central belt to Perth, but the section in between was closed at the time of writing – and ScotRail has warned that disruption will continue for the rest of the day.

Earlier today, railway engineers had warned passengers of significant disruption as a result of deep drifts near Dalwhinnie, and heavy lying snow on a number of passing loops and rail points at Tomatin, Slochd and Moy.

And now they have released video footage showing the aftermath of ploughing efforts on the line – with discoloured snow showing the areas where the train has dug through drifts.

Up to two feet of snow is sitting atop the rails in places.
