The Cairngorm Mountain Rescue Team members were involved in a rescue operation starting last night lasting nearly 10 hours to rescue a lost walker on the Cairngorm plateau in freezing conditions.

HM Coastguard Highland Rescue 151 had been called in to assist but the helicopter's attempts were thwarted by hill fog.

The rescue team was alerted at 5.50pm along with Braemar Mountain Rescue to help locate the missing walker on the high tops.

A CMRT spokesperson said: "Police were able to get a location on the missing persons phone which led to them to being located on the north side of Ben Macdui.

"HM Coastguard Highland Rescue 151 flew in to assist but was hampered by the foggy conditions on the hill.

"We located the walker at 11.30pm and after a bit of rewarming everyone was able to walk off the hill.

"We were back at base 3.30am.

"Many thanks to Cairngorm Mountain Resort for their assistance during this rescue."

The CMRT relies on public donations to fund its life-saving work. Find out more about the team at https://cmrt.org.uk
