Homes situated behind the construction site of a new 3-18 school campus in Tain were hit by further flood devastation last night, after spells of very heavy rainfall during Storm Babet.

Silt water could be seen pouring from garden walls onto the road and gardens left underwater as properties on Moss Road were hit by a latest bout of floods.

It is not the first time the street has been hit by excessive floods. Concerns from people living near the site of the new state of the art campus were first raised in November last year after their properties were hit by flooding during spells of heavy rainfall.

Contractor Kier Construction stated in January that they believed they had resolved the issue with the capping of an old field drain.

But residents close to the development believe that despite the heavy rainfall, the presence of silt water is a further indication of drainage problems at the site of the new school.

One resident said: "I fear we the residents are not being told the truth. The site is worse than ever. Although the drainage might be in, they can’t tie into anything into it until the groundworks are complete and that will be months and months away. We are done with it, up all night with worry it was going to come in the house.

"Kier have been good to deal with, offering us all they can to help. They even came out at 11pm last night to try to resolve the issue before finally saying there’s nothing they can do.

"My understanding is that they can’t tie into both drains to take the water off site so they are only using one drain, which obviously can’t cope, and they can’t use there big tank to hold water for some reason. The site water is worse than ever.

"The blame here in my opinion is with the council. The drainage should have been priority at this end of the site. This is silt water running through our gardens – not clean water."

Highland Council have been contacted for comment.
