A DEDICATED group of volunteers have come together to restore and update a visitor information panel on the Black Isle.

The Paths Around Avoch sign was originally installed in the 1990s as part of a wider project across Ross-shire using funding from bodies including Highland Council and the National Lottery.

However, it had become almost illegible thanks to years of exposure to the elements and had become partially obscured in its location near the Station Hotel.

Members of Avoch and Killen Community Council (AKCC) worked to move the sign to a more prominent position, and designed a new, updated information panel.

The sign highlights recommended walking routes, as well as interesting facts about Avoch and the surrounding area.

The new panel can be found at the famous Lazy Corner in the village. The project also details Avoch’s fishing heritage, and more information on this can be found on panels at the harbour and among the "streeties" – the rows of old fishermen’s cottages.

Funding for the new project was provided by Avoch Heritage Association in recognition of the work AKCC is doing to promote the village and its historical significance.

The community council’s chairwoman Sarah Dunton said: "Volunteers from AKCC carried out the restoration work on the wooden frame and also created the updated information panel.

"It is a testament to the great team spirit existing within AKCC.

"We are very grateful to Avoch Heritage Association for generously funding this project.

"It will encourage not just residents of Avoch and Killen but also visitors to the Black Isle to enjoy the beautiful scenery and wildlife surrounding us."
