Highland Armed Forces veterans and families have new support co-ordinator

VETERANS support group Walking With The Wounded (WWTW) has appointed a digital support care co-ordinator in the Highlands and Islands.
Veronica Young will provide remote support and care co-ordination to isolated and lonely veterans empowering them to regain their independence, thrive and contribute in our communities.
Ms Young’s role will see her work closely with a range of Armed Forces, civilian third sector and statutory services.
WWTW supports those who have served in the British Armed Forces and their families. The charity specialises in developing pathways to independence as well as employment with organisations who recognise and value the unique skills and qualities of our ex-service personnel.
WWTW's digital and telephone support service aims to provide support and care co-ordination to isolated and lonely veterans via social prescription.
Prior to joining WWTW, Ms Young worked for the RAF Benevolent Fund as social engagement worker at RAF Lossiemouth, helping isolated excluded members of the RAF serving community and/or their families.
She has also held numerous voluntary roles including work with SSAFA the Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen and Families Association as in-service chairwoman, volunteer coordinator and caseworker, RAF Association branch secretary and telephone friendship facilitator for Age UK.
She said: “WWTW do an incredible job supporting vulnerable veterans and their families when they leave the Armed Forces. My new role presents the opportunity to work with veterans who may be feeling isolated, excluded, or just unsure where to turn to for help.
"I can act as an empowering, empathic, bridge that enables them to achieve a positive pathway from where they find themselves now to where they would like to be.”
Tommy Watson, WWTW director of operations north, said: “Veronica is a great addition to the team. She brings with her a wealth of experience having worked in the military and veteran sector for over 20 years and will help establish WWTW in Scotland and reach isolated veterans to help them achieve their very best possible outcomes.”
