A man and a woman had to be taken to hospital following a four-vehicle collision on the A9 today.

It was just south of Tain, in Easter Ross, and the road was initially blocked in both directions.

Fire crews were sent from Tain, Dornoch, Invergordon, Inverness Dingwall and Ballintore.

A Scottish Fire and Rescue Service spokesman said they got the call at 12.44pm and when they arrived firefighters made the scene safe.

Ambulance and police were also in attendance and a Police Scotland spokeswoman said: "Emergency services attended at Knockbreck Road, Tain, at 12.40pm on Wednesday, December 16, following a crash involving four vehicles. A man and a woman were taken to hospital."

The southbound carriageway was reopened around 2pm, with the northbound side of the road remaining closed and police directing traffic.

Motorists were advised to use an alternative route.
