Highland Councillor Angela Maclean, who has been witnessing the ongoing “police incident” at Glasgow Airport, says passengers are being told that flights are now being cancelled.

Staff are informing people that because they cannot access the terminal then they are unable to facilitate boarding and passengers are being advised of what to do according to airline.

It remains unclear how many flights have been cancelled after passengers were asked to evacuate the terminal and gather in the adjacent multi-storey car park after a “suspicious item” was discovered.

Some passengers were told that Ryanair moved their flights to Prestwick and are trying to get their passengers there while EasyJet appears to have cancelled some of its departures.

Cllr Maclean said: “Staff are coming round the crowd and announcing that flights are now cancelled as staff can't help as they are not able to get into the airport. People are being called forward by [airline] company to be told what is happening.

She described the scene, saying: “It was calm inside the airport early 6am or 7 am this morning. We couldn't hear what was being said on the tannoy then people were asked to move out to the carpark around 8.30am.

“We passed the bomb squad truck with the robot sitting outside it. We were asked to move to the back of the car park. Many have been given blankets and foil blankets. Water was distributed inside the airport.”

Earlier, a spokesperson for the airport said the central search check-in desks were closed and that passengers arriving at the airport for departing flights will face delays while checks are carried out.

Police confirmed that the "Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) is in attendance and a cordon is now in place."
