EIGHT properties were made unfit to live in after the blaze that ravaged a building near the harbour in Nairn, according to council officers.

Nairn councillor Paul Oldham shared an update via his newsletter with an update following the blaze in the three-storey block in Harbour Road, which started just after 1pm.

He said that council officers confirmed that eight properties within the block of flats have been rendered inhabitable and that Scottish Fire and Rescue Service believes the building is at risk of collapse and have asked for a structural engineer, with fencing and road closure in place.

The crews remain on the scene, with Police Scotland has confirming everyone is safe and accounted for.

According to the update, NHS Highland is leading on Care for People, with Highland Council Housing assisting and helping with options for those people displaced who do not have insurance.

He added: "It sounds like everything is in hand but if anyone has any issues then my contact details are Paul.Oldham.cllr@highland.gov.uk or 07901 287131.

"I’m also getting reports that tap water in Fishertown is running brown. This is quite common after a fire: pulling a lot of water fast stirs up the peat lying at the bottom of the pipes. Advice from Scottish Water when this last happened to us is that it's basically harmless but to just run the taps until they run clear, which may take a while."
