Three unusual and so far unidentified objects were sighted above Alness on Saturday evening, with a quite a few people intrigued by what they could be.

Sightings of unusual activity in Alness on a Saturday night are not entirely uncommon but they usually happen at terrestrial level not above Obsdale Road.

A number of readers wrote in to clarify that the lights were lanterns in commemoration of a young man who passed away a year ago.

Earlier, local councillor Maxine Smith put out a light-hearted post on social media describing how a friend had videoed "three unidentified aircraft flying over Obsdale from the Newmore direction."

She went on to ask: "Did anyone see them? Do you think they were UFOs? I can’t think of another explanation. They were hovering not jetting overhead."

Unidentified Anomalous Phenomena (UAP)

Last September, NASA published a long-anticipated independent study into hundreds of reports of sightings of UAPs.

The agency had been investigating reports of mysterious sightings in the skies that are difficult to explain.

What it found was that there is "a lot more to learn" about UAPs but that there was no evidence that they came from outer space.

But it was admitted that though most UFO sightings have been explained there are a handful which cannot be called "known human-made or natural phenomena."
