UNCLAIMED bicycles have been donated by Police Scotland to a Ross-shire school.

The bikes, which have been handed over to Alness Academy, will be used in the school’s bicycle maintenance programme.

Sergeant Calum Reid, of the Alness community policing team, told the Journal: “We were delighted to donate these bikes to Alness Academy and we are always keen to support the work of the Alness Youth Partnership.”

The eight bikes had been in long-term storage at Alness police station but never recovered by their owners.

Sgt Reid gave them away after hearing about the initiative.

He said: “I’m sure they will now be put to very good use, teaching young people valuable skills for the future.”

The bike maintenance scheme is run by the school’s craft, design and technology department, which teaches pupils how to repair, strip and carry out general maintenance on bikes.

The programme is more than just an after-school club to the pupils as they receive a SQA level 3 qualification after completing the course.
