A PLANNING application has been put forward to introduce an entrance feature in a village in Wester Ross.

Local group Welcome Ullapool is seeking to replace the current signage with a new welcoming installation both at its northern and southern gateways.

The planning application for the feature, which aims to involve artwork from local craftspeople, has been submitted to Highland Council with a potential illustration of the artwork.

Welcome Ullapool secretary Angela Ford said: "Many people hate the current sign, it's just black and white and is often obscured by trees so we thought to introduce a more dramatic entrance. We want to introduce a sign that makes a statement about the village, that would mark Ullapool out and that tourists and passers-by would notice.

"What we'd like to do is to work with local producers and artists to create this. We hope this will also benefit local businesses."

The project is still in the early stages, however it will likely involve stonework and LED lighting as well as featuring herring, which have been of vital importance to the development of the village.
