Storm Gerrit has forced the cancellation of multiple ferry sailings in the Minch, CalMac has warned.

The 7am and 2pm Stornoway to Ullapool service and the 10.30am Ullapool to Stornoway sailing have all been cancelled on Wednesday due to "strong winds".

However, in an update on Wednesday morning CalMac said it "expected" to resume services with the 5.30pm Ullapool to Stornoway crossing, and its night-time freight services were showing as running as normal at the time of writing.

Urging passengers to check for the latest updates before travel, a CalMac spokesperson said: "Cancelling a sailing is a decision we do not take lightly because we know it will inconvenience our customers and the communities we serve.

"However, the safety of our customers and crew must come first. In this instance, the Master of the vessel has judged it is necessary in response to the assessment of adverse weather conditions."

The ferry cancellations come amid wider disruption from Storm Gerrit, with hundreds of homes reportedly without power in the Highlands on Wednesday morning, and a number of railway services also hit.
