A NEW exhibition based on the travels of a writer and artist couple has opened in Ullapool.

The show at An Talla Solais gallery features work by writer Ian Stephen and visual artist Christine Morrison based on their travels sailing and overland from their home port of Stornoway on the Isle of Lewis.

The exhibition, called Grammar of Wavelength, is is inspired by their voyages on their sloop El Vigo to outlying islands including the Shiants, St Kilda, Shetland and Fair Isle.

This is offset by their responses to travels abroad, deep inland as well as coastal explorations.

Projects and residencies have taken them westwards to the Canadian Prairies and into the southern hemisphere to Tasmania.

Coming from different backgrounds and different disciplines in the arts, the two exhibit together as Stephen Morrison.

A growing body of work work includes framed artists’ prints, artists’ books, texts, video installation, ready made objects, sculpted objects, earth pigment paintings and works on paper.

The exhibition also features two publications, Maritime: new and selected poems by Ian Stephen with images by Christine Morrison, and Waypoints, seascapes and stories from Scotland’s west coast, also by Ian and illustrated by Christine.

Ian explained: "Both Christine and myself have had a long-standing relationship with An Talla Solais and with the Ullapool arts community. We’ve both recently taken part in group exhibitions in Ullapool, as individuals.

"The two of us, and therefore the elusive Stephen Morrison, are very happy to grasp the chance to show an extended version of Grammar of Wavelength in this excellent gallery space."

The exhibition will travel on to Taigh Chearsabhagh Museum and Arts Centre in Lochmaddy, North Uist, later this year.

Grammar of Wavelength by Stephen Morrison is on show at An Talla Solais Gallery, The Caledonian Hotel, West Argyle Street, Ullapool, until Sunday, May 7.

The gallery is open from 10am to 5pm daily.
