Two people have appeared in private at Inverness Sheriff Court charged with murdering a 61-year-old Kyle of Lochalsh man.

The development comes after extensive enquiries by Police Scotland's Major Investigation Team into the circumstances surrounding the death of Michael Whyte, who died at a property in Plock Road, on April 23.

It is believed the arrests were made in the area on Wednesday and 31-year-old Michael Joyce and 26-year-old Antonia Gunn, both from Kyle of Lochalsh, appeared before Sheriff Eilidh Macdonald on Thursday.

Gunn was represented by Ken Ferguson and Joyce by John MacColl, both Inverness solicitors.

The pair made no plea, were committed for further examination and remanded in custody.

Mr MacColl said after the appearance: "I can confirm that no application for bail was made today but it is anticipated that such an application will be made at the next calling of the case."

The charge read that between April 22, 2023 and April 23, 2023 they assaulted Mr Whyte and repeatedly struck him on the head and body, by means as yet unknown, all to his severe injury and did murder him.

Following the death, police kept a presence at the house in the days that followed.
