Councillors and staff raised cash and donated gifts to provide a welcome boost for two Highland charities before Christmas.

They organised a charity raffle, coffee morning and staff pantomime at Highland Council’s Inverness headquarters, all in aid of Highland Hospice, which raised a total of £6868.51.

And hundreds of gifts from a number of council offices were also donated to the annual MFR Cash For Kids Mission Christmas Appeal, to go to disadvantaged children in Highland, Moray and Aberdeenshire.

Around 5578 children each received gifts this Christmas thanks to the Inverness-based radio station’s annual fundraiser – including 4966 in the Highlands.

Donna Manson, the council’s chief executive, said: “We are so proud of our staff and members who have not only donated a large number of gifts to the MFR Mission Christmas appeal, but also donated a huge total to the Highland Hospice.

“We know how expensive this time of year can be and people’s generosity particularly at this time is incredible. We also know the festive season is not a happy time for everyone, but I hope the generosity of our staff, members and our communities will provide some Christmas cheer for those less fortunate.”

Lyndsay Rose, charity manager of MFR Cash for Kids, said: “No matter what you’ve done you have played your part in making Christmas special for children in our community. Your donations are so much more than gifts to these children, they give them hope, a confidence boost and allow them to have something to talk about when they go back to school in January.”
