FOND memories of a Ross-shire woman whose smile is remembered by all who met her have been shared following her death.

The funeral will take place today (Friday) at Dingwall Free Church of Kathleen Sutherland, understood to have been the oldest member within the Ross-shire Federation of the SWI.

Kathleen, who was 93, was born near Kildonan in Sutherland, and had lived for many years in Dingwall and then latterly at Urray House care home in Muir of Ord.

A mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, she was a very active member within Dingwall SWI.

Her family, who have been inundated with good wishes from those who remember their mother, said: "She was a very precious and dearly loved lady. She had a very strong faith and always put everyone else first."

Kathleen volunteered many years at Blythswood at Deephaven sorting through donations and was also an active with the local Arthritis Club and an enthusiastic visitor to the Dingwall and District Accordion and Fiddle Club and the town's Highland Fling ceilidh events and Dingwall Gaelic Choir.

She also had a strong artistic streak and enjoyed painting flowers and landscapes and learning new crafts. She also won The Over-80s trophy for her immaculate knitted kilt socks.

Dingwall SWI shared the news "with great sadness and heavy heart".

The group's Lynn Winpenny said: "Kathleen, or 'mam' as I affectionately called her, was a very active member within Dingwall SWI alongside her daughter Phyllis.

"She had been a member, and rejoined after her husband's death and fully embraced what activities were on within the Institute. Kathleen truly loved her SWI and all the members. All the members loved her too.

"She will be remembered as a lovely, kind, cheery lady who always had a smile for everyone. She was also known to grace the dance floor at our tea dances and get up and sing or recite a poem.

"Our condolences go to Phyllis, Sandra, Uisdean and Moira and their families on their sad loss."

Her late husband Dod Sutherland worked on the railways.

Kathleen's funeral will be on Friday, December 10 at noon at Dingwall Free Church.
