TRIBUTES are being paid to a stalwart of the Strathpeffer and surrounding community who has died.

John MacGregor, Achterneed Farm, Strathpeffer, has passed away at the age of 83.

John had lived in Strathpeffer all his life where he was a very well known and highly respected member of the community.

He farmed at Achterneed and Ardival Farms throughout his life and was involved in all aspects of the community, particularly so in the community council, where he had served terms as chairman; the Strathpeffer Highland Gathering Association, where he had served a term as convenor, was a life member, and was, until his passing, the honorary president.

He has also been a member of the steering group set up locally to investigate the renovation and eventual re-opening of the Strathpeffer Spa Pavilion.

John also had a huge involvement in shinty and Caberfeidh Shinty Club in particular, where he was a life member. John had started playing as a youngster in Fodderty Primary School, Strathpeffer, then at Dingwall Academy before progressing to the Caberfeidh teams.

His playing days at senior level stretched from the late 1950s through to the 1970s where he had served a period as 1st team captain.

After his playing days were over he was elected to the committee and was the club president for some years, during which period the club, along with the Highland Gathering Committee, developed and opened the new sports pavilion at Castle Leod.

Along with his wife, Valerie, he did a lot of work preparing the playing field and looking after the new facilities.

John was very proud of the fact that all his four sons, Iain, Fraser, Graham and Alexander, all played for the club and worked for the club in various capacities, and also of his grandson, Connor, who is currently a member of the club’s 1st team.

John’s passing has left a huge void in the Strathpeffer community and will be very sorely missed.

Sympathies have been passed by well-wishers to Valerie, Iain, Fraser, Graham and Alexander and their respective partners and families.

His funeral service will take place in Fodderty and Strathpeffer Parish Church on Tuesday, August 29 at 1pm with interment thereafter at Fodderty Cemetery.

Family flowers only are requested but donations, if so desired, may be given at the service for Alzheimer Scotland (Dingwall Branch), or may be sent to Alasdair Rhind funeral directors, Sutherland House, Bank Street, Tain or donate by BACS to RBS s/c 83-27-25 a/c 00254580. Ref: the late John.
