James MacNeil, one of the most influential figures of the Inverness Darts League and worked to promote the game throughout the Highlands has died.

MacNeil was the secretary of the Inverness Winter Darts League.

He wrote weekly updates of darts competitions as well as took and collected photographs of trophy presentations of competitions in the city.

Darts players and venues have paid tribute to MacNeil this morning after learning of his passing.

The Innes Bar wrote on their social media site: "It is with an incredibly heavy heart that we make this post.

"Jim MacNeil will always be a legend in the darts community he did so much to promote and keep Inverness and Highland Darts running so well for all these years.

"Our thoughts and love go out to Tia, Rebecca and Debra at this the saddest of times."

Darts players and friends have also posted messages on the Inverness Summer Darts League Facebook site.

Highland News and Media sports editor Will Clark paid tribute to MacNeil's regular darts coverage in the Inverness Courier and Highland News.

He said: "Jim was the voice of darts in Inverness. His passion for the sport was unrivalled and he played an important part of the sport's coverage.

"He always helped us greatly in ensuring achievements by players in Inverness and across the region were recognised.

"Without Jim, we would never have been able to do darts in Inverness justice and I will always be grateful for the help he gave us.

"He was a friend of the newspaper and our condolences go to his family."
