Sheriff Eilidh Macdonald deferred sentence and said she was asking for Reilly to be held in custody so he could seek available help.

A 37-year-old Alness man stood trembling in the dock as his lawyer told a sheriff that his client "has a dreadful alcohol addiction".

Jamie Reilly, of River Lane, was appearing from custody to admit five charges of shoplifting from his local Co-op supermarket.

The offences occurred on April 8, July 1 and 3 this year and all but one theft involved stealing alcohol. The other was for a bottle of juice.

On hearing from defence advocate Neil Wilson and seeing the evidence of Reilly's problem, Sheriff Eilidh Macdonald told him that she was not going to deal with the case immediately but would defer it for a background report.

She also told him that she wasn't going to release him back to his home "for the sake of his health." The Sheriff advised Reilly that he should take advantage of the help which will be provided to him in custody.

Reilly will appear again at Tain Sheriff Court on August 2.
