A BLACK Isle fisherman who drove his car and trailer at almost twice the 50mph speed limit has been banned from driving for four months.

John McLeman (33), of Mains of Bennetsfield, Avoch, admitted at Inverness Sheriff Court driving carelessly on the A96 near Tomhommie on November 8, 2017, causing his trailer to bounce dangerously. He also admitted failing to appear for an earlier hearing.

Police saw the rig-up being driven at 94mph around10pm during high winds. The legal limit was 50mph.

Fiscal depute Rowena Carlton said: “The trailer was only partially loaded and officers knew that trailers were prone to being unstable at this speed and in high winds.”

McLeman, who works out of Peterhead, asked to keep his licence. But he was disqualified and fined a total of £750 after the Sheriff was told he had a previous drink drive offence and six points already on his licence.
