A NEWLY-designed trail giving walkers the chance to explore more than three billion years of history gets an official launch this month.

Led by the Achiltibuie Tourist Association the newly designed 45-mile Geotrail on the Coigach peninsula comprises a series of 10 main excursions all within six miles of Achiltibuie.

Each explores the geological evidence of the Earth’s history including the influence of floods, deserts, ice, seismic events and a massive asteroid impact.

The routes also visit some of the best viewpoints in the area as well as beaches and coastal paths.

The trail has been produced in collaboration with the North West Highlands Geopark and the British Geological Survey with assistance from the Coigach Assynt Living Landscape Partnership Community Grants Scheme, SNH, The Heritage Lottery Fund, Highland Council, Coigach Community Council and the Curry Fund of the Geologists’ Association.

And there are a number of events taking place in April to mark its official launch.

On Tuesday, April 17 there is a chance to visit Reiff and Badentarbat on the new Geotrail with authors of the trail information leaflet Patrick Cossey and Pete Harrison from the North West Highlands Geopark.

Starting at Coigach at 10.15am the trip is suitable for beginners as well as anyone with an existing interest in geology.

A similar trip on Saturday, April 21 will take in Cnoc Mor and Rubha Dunan with the same starting point and time.

On the same date, in Coigach Community Hall, there is a chance to enjoy soup and sandwiches as a fundraiser for local charity group Lucky2BHere which raises funds to provide defibrillators in communities across Scotland as well as training volunteers in how to use them.

There will also be information on display relating to the Geotrail and then a free excursion at 2pm to walk off those extra calories and visit some of the other sites on the trail.

There will be a further chance at 4.30pm in the community hall to meet the authors and ask any questions over some tea and cake.
