An Ullapool writer and poet are holding a night of 'cabaret of poetry and prose' with hopes to create an informal atmosphere to encourage newcomers.

WordHaus is a "cabaret of poetry and prose" being at the held Ceilidh Place in Ullapool on November 17, with local writers Jon Miller and LG Thomson.

Describing the event, LG said: "The thinking behind Wordhaus is to disrupt the idea of writers reading their work in front of an audience sitting in polite rows. We want to bridge the gap between the stage and the floor, to tear up the reverential hush you often find at literary events and make it a different kind of experience – something we’re all in together. Removing that artificial barrier means there is the potential for it all to go horribly wrong, which, along with the fabulous spoken words, is one of the things that makes the concept so exciting."

Seating at the WordHaus event will be in cabaret style of multiple circular tables, with the bar open throughout the event.

With this informal approach, Jon and LG hope to encourage people who wouldn’t normally attend literary events to give it a try.

Working in partnership with local gallery An Talla Solais, this initial event is funded by Book Week Scotland, as well as receiving support from the Ceilidh Place in Ullapool.

The WordHaus event is said to be a pilot, with hopes of more WordHaus events taking place in the future.

The 18+ event will take place at 7.30pm, November 17, with tickets costing £5 from the Ceilidh Place reception.

Award-winning poet Jon Miller is a former editor of writing magazine Northwords Now, and was awarded joint first place in the 2022 Neil Gunn Poetry Competition, and was also named a winner of the 2022 International Book and Pamphlet Competition – resulting in the publication of his poetry pamphlet, Past Tense Future Imperfect.

Local author, LG Thomson has written seven books, including her recent memoir, Modernist Dreams Brutalist Nightmares. LG has also had a regular column in visual arts magazine, Art North. Both writers are said to be known for their dark humour.
