INVERGORDON lifeboat has been in action rescuing stranded teenagers from a cliff.

The "Douglas Aikman Smith" launched yesterday evening (Wednesday) following reports of two young people stuck on a rocky cliff on the Black Isle.

The volunteer crew launched the lifeboat at 7.13pm with a crew of five to undertake an extensive search for the teenagers aged 16 and 17.

Aberdeen Coastguard requested the launch to help locate and rescue the boy and girl who had become trapped by the rising tide after a walk along the shoreline between Eathie and McFarquhar’s Bed near Rosemarkie.

Low sunlight hampered the lifeboat crew’s search which was carried out along with a Coastguard helicopter from Dalcross.

The two walkers were located just to the west of McFarquhar’s Bed, perched on the rocky outcrop.

One of the teenagers was located around 30ft up the cliff and was winched on-board to the safety of the rescue helicopter.

The boy was rescued by lifeboat crew who launched the inflatable XP daughter craft as he located lower to the water level.

With no medical issues found on either of the youngsters rescued, the girl was transported to the SAR base at Dalcross, with the boy taken to Cromarty harbour where he was safely handed over to local coastguard teams.

Invergordon Lifeboat Coxswain Andrew Murray said: "In the light of this evening’s call-out, and the pleasurable weather conditions, always remember about safety and ensure when out walking along shorelines, you take into consideration tides and accessibility as part of your route planning."

The lifeboat was refuelled and ready for service by 9.20pm.
