HIGHLAND medics who practised their profession across the British Empire in the 18th and 19th centuries will be explored when Cromarty History Society meet next week.

Former NHS Highland board chairman, and freelance historian, David Alston will give a talk entitled ‘Three Doctors’, exploring three such medical professionals when Cromarty History Society & Friends of Cromarty Courthouse meet at the West Church Hall in Cromarty on Thursday, January 16 at 7.30pm.

In the 18th and 19th centuries some Scottish doctors went on to work in the army, as ship’s surgeons, and on slave plantations.

The talk describes three Highland doctors who worked in India, the Caribbean, and in Cromarty – and who both healed and harmed in the places where they practised.
