AN Easter Ross secondary school has signed up to a national campaign raising awareness of the importance of engaging with the democratic process.

Tain Royal Academy is amongst the early adopters for the #OurDemocracy campaign being supported by Highland Council and organised by the Electoral Commission.

The national campaign will run from January 30 to February 5, and will highlight the range of ways young people can get involved and make their voices heard.

Tain Royal Academy and Kingussie High School are the only Highlands schools to sign up to the campaign so far.

Schools will receive resources such as: lesson plans, interactive activities, a presentation for use at assemblies, posters and social media resources. As well as this, participating schools will have a chance to win £500 worth of school resources.

All the resources have been designed to help young people feel confident to get involved with democracy, and to head to the polling station.

Bill Gillies, the electoral registration officer for the Highlands and Western Isles, said: “I hope as many Highland schools, as well as colleges and youth groups take up this opportunity to get involved. Members of the Scottish Youth Parliament will be out and about throughout the week of the campaign, so now is the time for schools to sign up and receive their Welcome To Your Vote Week resources.”

The Highland Council has contacted all secondary schools on how they can get involved, and Head Teachers and teachers can also register.
