A ROAD closure timetable has been released ahead of major roadworks on the Stromeferry bypass – and motorists have been urged to study its time slots closely so they don’t get caught out when work begins this September.

Work on the rock face to the west of the rockfall shelter will get underway on September 3 and could last for up to three months.

During that period a road-rail bypass system will be in force on the A890, with vehicles directed onto a temporary road surface on the neighbouring rail track to get around the works.

But this means there will be frequent closures each day to enable trains to pass through.

The road will also be closed completely between the road closure gates of Ardnarff and Attadale every night between 10pm and 7am.

The road to rail operating times from Monday to Saturday will be between 7.10am and 10.30am, 11.35am and 11.55am, 2.35pm and 3.20pm, 4.15pm and 5pm, 6.10pm and 7.35pm and from 8.40pm to 10pm.

On Sundays the system will operate from 7.10am to 10.10am, 11.10am to 12.45pm, 1.45pm to 3pm, 4.15pm to 7.40pm, and 8.50pm to 10pm.

Outside these times the road will be completely closed, meaning waits of up to nearly two hours for any unlucky motorists who miss a window.

Drivers of vehicles weighing more than 7.5 tonnes will not be allowed to drive through the works at all – and will have to take the long diversion via the A87 to Invermoriston, up the A82 towards Inverness and along the A832 and A890.

"The council will be printing and distributing cards from mid-August onwards in the local community with details of the road to rail diversion operating times," said a council spokeswoman, who added that the times are subject to change.
