STAFF have been evacuated after an explosion in a boiler room at Raigmore Hospital in Inverness.

One of the hospital's two biomass boilers exploded around 10am today (Monday).

No-one was injured in the incident but three NHS Highland staff who were in the boiler room at the time of the explosion were evacuated.

There were no patients in the nearest ward, Ward 11, as work started today on its transformation as the new children’s ward. However, staff members working there were also evacuated.

People who were in Phases 11 and 111 of the Centre for Health Science were also evacuated into the facility’s Phase 1 building.

NHS Highland said the cause of the explosion had yet to be determined.

The hospital is now using its back-up oil-fired central heating system.
