THE Scottish SPCA is appealing for information after a cat was found caught in a spring trap in the Highlands.

Scotland’s animal welfare charity was alerted after the cat was found by a member of public on land near Movich Farm in Rogart, Sutherland.

The cat had to be put to sleep because of the extent of its injuries.

An undercover inspector from the charity’s Special Investigations Unit said: "Spring traps are legal and commonly used to control the population of certain target species such as stoats, weasels and grey squirrels.

"The traps however should be set in a natural or artificial tunnel to minimise the chance of killing or injuring any non-target animals, such as polecats, otters or in this case a domestic cat. There is legislation to adhere to when setting a spring trap in order for it to remain within the law.

"The cat involved, a black and white domestic short haired female cat, had no identification and wasn’t micro-chipped so we are appealing for an owner."
