59 varieties to 'eye' up at legendary Tattie Day on Black Isle this weekend
The Tattie Day is back at North Kessock Village Hall on March 4 from 11am to 3pm.
With 59 varieties of seed potato varieties for sale lots of choice for planters to ‘eye’ up their favourite spuds – earlies, mains, salads and purples.
Over the last couple of years Transition Black Isle have managed to distribute seed potatoes using a series of 'Tattie Hosts' around the Black Isle but they were keen to have their usual event this year.
Previously they have seen people from across the area keen on buying-up of rare, local, heritage and extremely tasty spud varieties for folk to grow at home or in allotments.
Anne Thomas, one of the trustees said: "It will be brilliant to see so many people enthusiastic about growing food and potatoes in particular. It's a great way to help with the climate crisis and cost of living crisis at the same time."
Soirbheas is also running a Potato Day in Drumnadrochit on the morning of the same day for people who live nearer there.
TBI has been working very hard to raise awareness of how far some food on our plates travels. It says: "What better way to cut our carbon emissions than a leisurely stroll down the garden for some lovely fresh potatoes and other vegetables?"
TBI will also be having a 'seed swap' stall where people can bring along seeds they have saved from their gardens or packets or part packets they don't need, or simply give a donation for seeds someone else has brought.
Potatoes will be available at subsequent Community Markets in Cromarty (Saturday, March 11), Culbokie (Saturday, March 18) and North Kessock (Saturday, March 25). TBI will be donating any leftovers to local schools and charities.
