A CHARITY is hoping to send its fundraising sky-high when runners and walkers pound the tarmac on the Inverness Airport runway next month - and places are running out.

Only around 40 of the hundreds original spots are still available for the 'Run the Runway' charity event, which will take place from 10pm on Saturday, August 26.

And to tempt people to sign up for the unusual fundraiser, the charity Maggie's Highland is offering special prizes for some of those who take part.

They are promising a "brilliant night" starting in the departure lounge with a DJ, party games, raffles and special prizes from Inverness Airports airline partners, KLM and Loganair before runners, joggers and walkers take to the runway at midnight.

Participants are asked to raise at least £115 to take part in the challenge. With all money raised going directly to Maggie’s Highlands, which offers free support to anyone living with cancer and their family and friends.

Inverness Airport general manager, Graeme Bell, said: “Our team is so excited to host this sixth Run the Runway event at Inverness Airport. We are really looking forward to seeing the participants take the runway by storm for their amazing fundraising achievements.

"It is a privilege to aid the incredible work that Maggie’s Highlands does to help those impacted by cancer. We are expecting a great high-energy, feel-good night for everyone involved.”

Seonaid Green, centre head at Maggie’s Highlands said: “We can’t thank our event partners, Inverness Airport enough for all their support in running this and all the previous Run the Runway events.

"It’s always such a fun event and the money we raise will allow us to continue to provide support to people in the Highlands and Islands who are newly diagnosed with cancer each year.

"This vital service is delivered by our team of highly qualified professional staff. We also support the children, family, and friends of anyone across the Highlands and Islands living with cancer.

"Last year we provided 19,500 support sessions, and this number continues to grow each year.”

Thanks to support from Inverness Airport’s airline partners KLM and Loganair, the charity is able to offer "several fantastic prizes" to its fundraisers. These include two return tickets from Inverness Airport to any destination on the KLM Royal Dutch Airlines European Network and a pair of return tickets for flights on the Loganair network.

If you are interested in taking part in the event you can sign up at www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/maggies-highlands-run-the-runway-2023-tickets-520327311997.

Since Maggie’s opened its first centre in 1996, the charity has developed a programme of support to help people with cancer, as well as family and friends, take back control.

Maggie’s professional staff include psychologists, cancer support specialists and benefits advisors and is funded by voluntary donations.
