A MASKED snowman has been unveiled as the winner of a quirky competition which has provided a boost for a village hall in Applecross.

The Masked Singer event raised £1200 for the community hall which has suffered during the Covid pandemic from a lack of income.

Game for a laugh contestants, dressed in a variety of costumes, attracted around 80 guests with donations on the door and the raffle taking in more than £1200. A further £1200 was taken in from bar sales.

Applecross Community Hall chairman Jack Marris said: “Everyone was commenting on how good the night was.”

The winner of the night was the The Snowman who was unveiled as Gemma Urquhart with her rendition of Shania Twain’s Man I feel like a Woman.

Mr Marris added: “Applecross is good at doing one-off events. There is so much talent on the peninsula. It was so nice to see everyone gathering again.”

The event drew around 80 people.

Applecross Community Hall has seen a cut in the funding it receives in the last two years during the pandemic.

Mr Marris said: “At the moment it costs £15,000 a year to run the hall with continued maintenance of a large building and cleaning costs. There are now the increased bills for gas, electricity and oil.”

The hall has just joined the Touring Network which works with venues and musicians to make more events happen to make Applecross more appealing for events and bands.
