A cold snap bringing snow and icy patches across the Highlands was signalled this evening with the start of a Met Office weather warning.

The Yellow alert for snow says it is "likely" to cause some disruption to travel.

Some roads and railways are also likely to be affected with longer journey times by road, bus and train services.

The warning for Monday, triggered at midnight, states: "Snow showers are likely to cause some disruption to travel with a small chance of more widespread disruption for some.

"There is a small chance of travel delays on roads with some stranded vehicles and passengers, along with delayed or cancelled rail and air travel.

"There is a slight chance that some rural communities could become cut off.

"A small chance of injuries from slips and falls on icy surfaces.

"There is a small chance that power cuts will occur and other services, such as mobile phone coverage, may be affected."

And the warning for Tuesday states: "Frequent snow showers will continue, causing further disruption in places."

The forecast for Monday is for a cold and breezy day with frequent scattered sleet and snow showers, falling heavy at times. Sunny spells are expected between the showers.
