Sheriff Gary Aitken heard the case at Inverness Sheriff Court.

A pensioner driving a Land Rover and trailer decided to overtake a slow moving car in front of him during a journey in Ross-shire.

But Inverness Sheriff Court heard that although 69-year-old Stephen Last, of Kirkaig Lodge, Inverkirkaig near Lochinver checked his mirror, he didn't look over his shoulder to see his blind spot.

Defence agent John MacColl told Sheriff Gary Aitken that another car had been travelling behind his client and had decided to overtake the two vehicles ahead near Ullapool on January 13, 2022.

"Then there was a bump," Mr MacColl said.

Sheriff Aitken commented: "Overtaking with a vehicle towing a trailer probably wasn't the wisest thing to do."

Mr MacColl replied: "I take your Lordship's point but the vehicle in front was very slow moving."

He told the court Last had been travelling at 45mph but the other car was doing only around 30mph.

Last was fined £640 and had his licence endorsed with six penalty points after he admitted careless driving.
